Corbin Burns improves to 11-1 as Reds rout Phillies 11-5, McClanahan shuts out Yankees 3-0, and Angels blast Rangers 13-1 in Wednesday's 15-game MLB card.
Wednesday's 15-game MLB slate produced three clean storylines. Corbin Burns ran his record to 11-1 with a dominant outing as the Reds put up 11 on Philadelphia. Shane McClanahan shut out the Yankees 3-0 at Tampa Bay, giving the Rays a 2-0 series lead. And the Dodgers answered Tuesday's upset loss to Colorado with a 4-3 win of their own. The NBA and NHL remain in their offseasons.
MLB — Wednesday, July 8
Cincinnati Reds, 11 — Philadelphia Phillies, 5. Corbin Burns (11-1, 2.54) was in full control. The Reds backed him with 11 runs and Burns improved to 11-1, one of the stronger records in the majors. A. Rangel (0-2, 4.19) took the loss for Philadelphia in a game that was never close.
Tampa Bay Rays, 3 — New York Yankees, 0. Shane McClanahan (8-5, 2.83) held the Yankees scoreless on Wednesday, one game after Tampa Bay won 6-4 on Tuesday. New York is now 0-2 in the series and has been shut out in its most recent visit to Tropicana Field. B. Baker notched his 25th save; G. Cole (3-4, 4.04) took the loss.
Los Angeles Dodgers, 4 — Colorado Rockies, 3. The Dodgers answered. After Colorado's 4-3 upset on Tuesday, Los Angeles countered with a 4-3 win of their own on Wednesday. E. Henriquez (4-0, 2.43) pitched the Dodgers to the lead and T. Scott (S, 13) closed it out. A. Senzatela (8-1, 3.06) took the loss for the Rockies.
Los Angeles Angels, 13 — Texas Rangers, 1. The most lopsided game of the night. S. Natera Jr. earned his first career win (1-0, 3.38) and the Angels rolled to a 13-1 result. M. Gore (5-8, 4.72) gave up runs early and the game was decided by the third inning.
Washington Nationals, 8 — Houston Astros, 2. Félix Griffin (10-2, 2.77) reached double digits in wins on Wednesday. He kept Houston at bay at home as Washington scored eight runs. S. Arrighetti (7-5, 4.50) took the loss for the Astros.
Toronto Blue Jays, 10 — San Francisco Giants, 0. D. Cease (6-4, 2.56) was sharp and the Blue Jays put up 10 against L. Webb (5-7, 3.86), who took the loss. A clean shutout win for Toronto in San Francisco.
Atlanta Braves, 3 — Pittsburgh Pirates, 0. Atlanta bounced back sharply from Tuesday's 12-4 loss. D. Dodd (1-0, 2.16) picked up his first career decision with a shutout effort, and R. Iglesias added his 18th save. Pittsburgh's D. Santana (2-4, 5.17) took the loss.
Miami Marlins, 2 — Seattle Mariners, 0. T. Phillips (2-3, 3.28) threw a shutout for Miami and P. Fairbanks (S, 13) closed it cleanly. G. Kirby (7-8, 3.76) pitched well for Seattle but came away with the loss in a 2-0 result.
Chicago Cubs, 9 — Baltimore Orioles, 7. C. Rea (7-5, 4.75) earned the win as the Cubs held on for a 9-7 decision. J. Webb notched save No. 4; D. Kremer (1-2, 4.09) took the loss for Baltimore.
Boston Red Sox, 5 — Chicago White Sox, 0. J. Bennett (4-3, 2.64) shut out the White Sox and Boston won 5-0 on the road. D. Martin (9-4, 3.41) had his record drop to 9-4 with the loss despite his ERA holding steady.
Detroit Tigers, 6 — Athletics, 1. T. Melton (5-1, 1.82) held the Athletics to one run at home. Detroit won 6-1 as J. Springs (3-9, 6.08) absorbed the loss.
Minnesota Twins, 6 — Cleveland Guardians, 5. The tightest finish of the day. Y. Gomez (1-0) got his first career decision with the win; M. Festa (2-2, 3.99) took the loss. Minnesota held on 6-5 in a one-run game.
St. Louis Cardinals, 5 — Milwaukee Brewers, 1. The Cardinals bounced back from Tuesday's doubleheader sweep by holding the Brewers to one run. M. McGreevy (4-7, 3.01) outpitched K. Harrison (8-2, 3.01) — both pitchers with the same ERA — as St. Louis took the series opener back.
New York Mets, 6 — Kansas City Royals, 2. New York answered Tuesday's 16-12 loss with a clean 6-2 win. B. Raley (4-3, 2.16) got the win over A. Lange (0-5, 5.92) as the Mets controlled the game.
San Diego Padres, 10 — Arizona Diamondbacks, 4. M. King (6-7, 3.41) earned the win as San Diego scored 10 against J. Cabrera (0-2, 5.60). The Padres won 10-4 for their second straight convincing home win over Arizona.
What to watch tonight
Thirteen games on the Thursday card, heavy on the afternoon slate. Yankees-Rays at 1:10 PM is the clearest series situation: New York is 0-2 and has been shut out in its last visit; the Rays have the momentum. Phillies-Reds at 7:10 PM continues with Philadelphia trying to answer last night's 11-5 loss. Late windows in San Diego (9:40 PM) and San Francisco (9:45 PM) close things out.
